HELPFUL HINTS AND TIPS

HELPFUL HINTS AND TIPS

Well you've got your newly framed picture and can't wait to hang it, most times it won't be too large or heavy and so a single picture hook will suffice, we can supply these, you know the type, usually brass and with a hardened steel nail, if it's a big or heavy picture then a hook with 2 pins might have to be used and if it's really heavy then 2 of these to be safe, we can advise and supply these.
Occasionally a picture or piece is too big for a cord so we will fit strap hangers and advise on how to hang this type.
Picture plates for security might be rquired if hanging in a public space, we have these too.

Where are you going to put it?, ideally pictures don't like being right over a radiator, extreme changes in temperature can cause the paper to cockle, they don't like damp either, fussy devils aren't they, a bit like us.
Most pictures hung singley are meant to be hung at eye level, if you're hanging a group of pictures try laying them on the floor first to get a few ideas of how they will look on the wall and how much space they will take up, ( this saves a lot of nail extraction and renailing if you get the spacing wrong).

Prolonged direct sunlight can cause colours to fade, you will notice older prints where the blues have faded first, then a UV coated glass will prevent this, if it's just the glare from a window opposite your picture, non reflective glass will help ( non reflective glass does NOT stop fading, it will only prevent glare )

You know you've got to do it but when you clean your picture don't be over zealous with the glass spray, you don't want lots of fluid steaming down the glass and seeping under the frame and then absorbing into the picture, apply to a cloth first.
Frames can be dusted with a soft cloth or dry paintbrush is good for getting into the crevises on an ornate frame.

And if you have to wait to hang your art then stack them vertically the right way up and face to face or back to back if there's more than one so the hangers don't scratch the frame.

We get older pictures in for reglazing occasionally because the cord broke or the little round ring holding the cord came out, this is because the cord might have been parcel cord or sisal which rots over time and the little round hangers get bent and come loose (we never fit these) so check from time to time and if they look dodgy call in and get them replaced, it costs buttons and a lot less hassle and cheaper than glass all over the place.
